Don’t Do Anything?

by anita

One of the hardest things for me to do is to do nothing. And yet, I know and have learned over the years, that when you don’t know what to do next, what step to take, or what action to take the very best thing to do is NOT to do anything! Just be STILL and wait.

We all recognize that we are a society where doing “more” is the accepted norm; it’s a part of the American creed. And…please hear me clearly, there are times when making a move at the right time or doing what needs to be done is necessary. However there is definitely a time to be still and wait. – wait for the next thing to come, the next signal which will direct you when to make your next move and to trust that in the stillness the answer will com.

I am a list maker. I make out my list most every morning and I actually love the LIST. My daughter is also a list maker (I think it is an inherited trait, like doing crossword puzzles) or I suppose you might say I am right brained, a doer or whatever label you may want to attach to me. However, I KNOW when I am not grounded and need to just, step back and breathe, be still and wait for whatever the next step might be. It is a discipline which might even be a lost art.

When I moved to the mountains some years ago after having perfected the art of “doing”, one of my top priorities was to “know” a day. What does that mean? It meant I was so caught up in the day-to-day of my business and being “busy,” that I didn’t KNOW the day. How did it start? Did the sun come up roaring over the mountains in a cloudless sky or was it obscured by the clouds and felt like a “lazy day”? Was the wind blowing and in what direction? Did it change or stay the same?

I thought to myself, “What IF I only had a few days left and I knew it? What would I want to do? Besides being with those that I love, I would want to experience the day, breathe it in, be grateful for it, know the essence of what it was like, because you know what….no two days or alike. And then there is also the night! AH….. The night! Same thing…no two are alike.

I know that many of you are busy entrepreneur’s starting new businesses, running current businesses, taking care of families and starting new projects daily. I listen to you say that you are on overwhelm and that there are not enough hours in the day to do everything you need to get done. I also hear from clients that they are on a technology spinning wheel set on “automatic.”

I totally can relate to that. When I get too much on my plate and my mind is way too busy and things are swirling around I know it’s time to be still and wait, catch up with myself ( my authentic self) and STOP …. It’s time for me to do one thing: DON’T DO ANYTHING.

Here is my method. Schedule it in to your calender….Set aside DON’T DO ANYTHING TIME. You’ll be surprised what comes up!

I LOVE your phrase – ‘know the day’! What a great concept to be in the present moment, observing today as it unfolds! Thanks for the image, Anita.

And you are right about the ‘don’t do anything’ time. I often tell the ‘doers’ among my clients that, if the next step isn’t clear, the message is ‘don’t do anything yet.’

Great post!

Blessings, Rosemary

Love the puppy demonstrating how to do nothing. What a concept – the challenge of course is now to put it into practice!
THanks

Fabulous. I do schedule ‘don’t do anything’ time, and it is the most fiercely protected time in my calendar. Gives me the juice for everything else.

Great post!

Don’t do anything! Anita, that boggles my mind. Thank you of your example of “knowing the day”. I certainly want to take advantage of that simple but profound idea. I’m scheduling it in.

Anita – Love it!

Why is it so hard for us just to BE and having nothing on our calendar for the day?

I could say it is part of the grand conspiracy to make us productive little drones and feel guilty about having unfilled time, but then I might have to pull out my tin foil hat!

Being in the here and now has been one of my biggest challenges. But it’s so great to relish the moment and embrace what is. I find it far more peaceful than dwelling on the past or projecting into the future.

Write on!~

I’m just returning from a trip in California, where I had to let go of my ‘to do’ lists and just be.

It completely shifts everything.
